Helping the Poor and Distressed

The Church of Jesus Christ is committed to serving those in need, and it is also committed to cooperating with others in that effort.

Brothers and sisters, our beloved President Russell M. Nelson will address us later in this session. He has asked me to be the first speaker. Why did Pres. Nelson want Elder Oaks to speak first? Why this topic?

My subject today concerns what The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members give and do for the poor and distressed. Here he defines one of the chief aims of all disciples of Christ, especially us, as members of the Church of Jesus Christ. This consistent "action" should be one of the major things we define ourselves by. Does it begin and end with our tithes and offerings and what the Church does with our money? I will also speak of similar giving by other good people. Giving to those in need is a principle in all Abrahamic religions and in others as well. He establishes the good we have in common with all mankind that seeks to help the poor and needy.

A few months ago, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reported for the first time why the need to report this "for the first time"? the extent of our humanitarian work worldwide.1 Our 2021 expenditures for those in need in 188 countries worldwide totaled $906 million—almost a billion dollars. Seems to want to make it sound bigger by saying "billion" instead of "million". Why is this important? In addition, our members volunteered over 6 million hours of labor in the same cause.

Those figures are, of course, an incomplete report of our giving and helping. They do not include the personal services our members give individually as they minister to one another in called positions and voluntary member-to-member service. And our 2021 report makes no mention of what our members do individually through innumerable charitable organizations not formally connected with our Church. I begin with these.

In 1831, less than two years after the restored Church was organized, the Lord gave this revelation to guide its members and, I believe, all of His children worldwide: (D&C 48:26-28)

“Behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is compelled in all things, the same is a slothful and not a wise servant. …

“Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness;

“For the power is in them, wherein they are agents unto themselves. And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward.” This is an important declaration. Pres. Oaks states this is a "guiding revelation" on how we live our lives. It could explain the 2020 decisions as an example of our leaders "not being commanded in all things". They may have felt like moving forward with supporting the mandates and shots was a "good cause" and part of the "many things of their own free will" they chose to support because they believed it would "bring to pass much righteousness". It is also an important statement that we, as members should not wait to be commanded in all things either - by the Lord or the Prophet!

In more than 38 years as an Apostle and over 30 years of professional employment, I have seen many generous efforts by organizations and persons of the kind this revelation describes as “a good cause” and “bring[ing] to pass much righteousness.” There are uncounted examples of such humanitarian service throughout the world, beyond our own borders and beyond our common knowledge. Contemplating this, I think of the Book of Mormon prophet-king Benjamin, whose sermon included this eternal truth: “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.”
3 In our quest to love God, we must see our service to others as an expression of love for God first and our brothers and sisters as well.

Much welfare and humanitarian service to our fellow beings is taught and practiced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and by us as its members. For example,
we fast at the first of each month and contribute at least the equivalent of the uneaten meals to help those in need in our own congregations. The Church also makes enormous contributions for humanitarian and other services throughout the world. This is a reminder that we should be fasting every month and making a fast offering to our wards to help our own neighbors. We are also encouraged to make other "offerings" to help the poor and needy. I struggle with these "other" donations right now, because I don't like to see it used for vaccines, so I often find others in need to help with my offerings. I think the Lord accepts that. I also think we should make a fast offering anytime we fast, outside of the first Sunday fast. It can be to the ward or someone we see in need. I think the Lord accepts and honors that as well.

Despite all that our Church does directly, most humanitarian service to the children of God worldwide is carried out by persons and organizations having no formal connection with our Church. As one of our Apostles observed: “God is using more than one people for the accomplishment of his great and marvelous work. … It is too vast, too arduous, for any one people.”4  Orson F Whitney, Apr. 1928 As members of the restored Church, we need to be more aware and more appreciative of the service of others. Maybe one of the reasons for sharing all the church is doing is that we, as members, need to be more aware and more appreciative of what our own church is doing. Would    that make us want to participate more? Or do you feel that "billions" is enough? Certainly, we need to be more aware and appreciative of the service of others - in our homes, neighborhoods, cities, state, and nation.

Notes from Orson F Whitney talk:
-  What brings forth the "marvelous work and a wonder"?
Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honor me, but have removed their heart far from me,…

Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a ‘marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder; for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, be destroyed, especially in a violent manner, disappear gradually, die, deteriorate,  and the understanding of their prudent careful, good judgment, common sense, wisdom in practical matters, sensible, wise forethought men shall be hid.—Isa. 29:13, 14.

With the founding of the church, the Lord told the young boy Joseph, when speaking of the churches of the day, "they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far form me;" - linking the ancient prophecy to the work begun by Joseph Smith.

"...Perhaps the Lord needs such men on the outside of his Church, to help it along. They are among its auxiliaries, and can do more good for the cause where the Lord has placed them, than anywhere else. And the same is true of the priesthood and its auxiliaries inside the Church. Hence, some are drawn into the fold and receive a testimony of the Truth; while others remain unconverted—for the present; the beauties and glories of the gospel being veiled temporarily from their view, for a wise purpose. The Lord will open their eyes in his own due time...Again I say, the Lord’s Work has need of auxiliaries outside as well as inside, to help it along. Because of their worldly influence —which would depart if they connected themselves with the Church—many are kept where they are, where the Lord has placed them, and can best use them for the good of all.

This is an important reason not to cast off the good people in the Christian world who are trying to spread the good news of Jesus to the world and witness for His name. They are needed where they are to do the work God has for them, even though outside the bounds of the fullness of the gospel. We also need the wealth and worldly wisdom of the Gentiles, their planes and ships and railroads to bring the children into the fold.

The Church of Jesus Christ is committed to serving those in need, and it is also committed to cooperating with others in that effort. We recently made a large gift to the United Nations World Food Programme. Over the many decades of our humanitarian work, two organizations stand out as key collaborators: projects with the Red Cross and Red Crescent agencies in dozens of countries have provided the children of God crucial relief during natural disasters and conflicts. Likewise, we have a long record of assistance with Catholic Relief Services. These organizations have taught us much about world-class relief. Here he affirms what Elder Whitney said. We need the "wisdom" of others in accomplishing God's work. We don't know everything nor have all the experience we need. Perhaps we need to work with the corrupt UN to gain access to those who are in need.

We have also had fruitful collaborations with other organizations, including Muslim Aid, Water for People, and IsraAID, to name just a few. While each humanitarian organization has its own areas of specialization, we share the common goal of relieving suffering among God’s children. All of this is part of God’s work for His children. I don't think the church, or God, for that matter are as concerned with the politics or religious views of a group as they are the desire to help the poor and the needy. Join hands with anyone who wants to lift another.

Modern revelation teaches that our Savior, Jesus Christ, is “the true light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”5 By this, all the children of God are enlightened to serve Him and one another to the best of their knowledge and ability.

The Book of Mormon teaches that “every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.”6Everything and everyone.
Continuing:

“For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; meaning you ARE to judge (in God's way) for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ. …

“And now, my brethren, … ye know the light by which ye may judge, which light is the light of Christ.”7

Here are some examples of children of God helping other children of God with their vital needs for food, medical care, and teaching:

Ten years ago, the Kandharis, a Sikh husband and wife in the United Arab Emirates, personally launched a remarkable effort to feed the hungry. Through the Guru Nanak Darbar Sikh temple, they are currently serving over 30,000 vegetarian meals every weekend to anyone who enters their doors, regardless of religion or race. Dr. Kandhari explains, “We believe that all are one, we are children of one God, and we are here to serve humanity.”8

The provision of medical and dental care to those in need is another example. In Chicago, I met a Syrian-American critical care physician, Dr. Zaher Sahloul. He is one of the founders of MedGlobal, which organizes medical professionals to volunteer their time, skills, knowledge, and leadership to help others in crises, such as in the Syrian war, where Dr. Sahloul risked his life in giving medical care to civilians. MedGlobal and similar organizations (including many Latter-day Saint professionals) demonstrate that God is moving professionals of faith to bring the poor needed relief worldwide.9

Many unselfish children of God are involved in teaching efforts, also worldwide. A good example, known to us through our humanitarian efforts, is the activity of a man known as Mr. Gabriel, who has been a refugee from various conflicts on several occasions. He recently observed that hundreds of thousands of refugee children in East Africa needed help to keep their hopes alive and their minds active. He organized other teachers in the refugee population into what they called “tree schools,” where children were gathered for lessons under the shade of a tree. He did not wait for others to organize or direct but personally led efforts that have provided learning opportunities for thousands of primary school children during stressful years of displacement. Caring for the poor and needy requires one to be unselfish, which means the opposite is true. If you have the means and you do not engage, then perhaps you are being selfish. Don't wait for others to tell you when it's okay to serve. Let the Spirit tell you and it will always be right.

Of course, these three examples do not mean that everything said or done by organizations or individuals purporting to be good or of God is truly that. These examples do show that God inspires many organizations and individuals to do much good. It also shows that more of us should be recognizing the good done by others and supporting it as we have the time and means to do so. He seems to make the statement here, that you do not have withhold your help from an organization if some of what they say or do is not good. Just recognize the good they are doing and support it as you are able with your time and means. I would submit that one has to be careful that your time and means are actually going where it is needed if you are dealing with a group that has some activities and causes you do not support.

Here are some examples of service the Church supports and which our members and other good people and organizations also support with individual donations of time and money:

I begin with religious freedom. In supporting that, we serve our own interests but also the interests of other religions. As our first President, Joseph Smith, taught, “We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.”10

Other examples of the restored Church’s humanitarian and other assistance that are also supported voluntarily by our members are our well-known schools, colleges, and universities this is a hard one, since so many schools and universities have things going on that I do not support. One must be careful an selective and not just give a blank check and our less-known but now published large donations for the relief of those suffering from the destructions and dislocations of natural disasters like tornadoes and earthquakes.

Other charitable activities our members support by their voluntary donations and efforts are too numerous to list, but just mentioning these few will suggest their variety and importance: combating racism and other prejudices; researching how to prevent and cure diseases; helping the disabled; supporting music organizations; and improving the moral and physical environment for all.

All of the humanitarian efforts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seek to follow the example of a righteous people described in the Book of Mormon: “And thus, in their prosperous circumstances, they did not send away any who were naked, or that were hungry, or that were athirst, or that were sick, … and they … were liberal to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, whether out of the church or in the church.”11 The church is under current fire for some of the investments that they did not disclose properly according to current laws. Is the church withholding aid to the need by investing the money instead? Or do the proceeds from the investments do just as much or more than the money would if spent when received? Is it ok to invest in companies that have profit motives that cause them to engage in immoral or illegal or unethical behavior? Do you not care about what your money supports if it kicks back a portion of it's ill-gotten profits back to you? If the church does not support gambling because it promotes a "something for nothing" attitude, what is the stock market? Most people do not invest because the want to support the growth of a company. They only care about the possibilities of a return. The company gets the "something" but the people don't care about that nor do they receive that, generally. They only see the profit.

I testify of
Jesus Christ, whose light and Spirit guide all of the children of God in helping the poor and distressed throughout the world. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen. Regardless of what you think the church should or shouldn't be doing with the tithes and offerings, the main message here is that Disciples of Christ should be anxiously engaged in relieving the suffering of their brothers and sisters and should join hands with others who desire to do the same.

Lessons Learned:

  1.  Define your discipleship as one who helps the poor and distressed and encourage other Christians to do the same.

  2. This is how you "Love God"

  3. Don't wait to be "commanded in all things"

  4. Fast once a month and give a fast offering.

  5. You can help others around the world through other offerings.

  6. Don't discount those outside our Church that God is using to do His work. Be aware and grateful. Work with them.

  7. How to judge if something is good or evil: (stated twice in a row)

    1. EVERY THING and EVERY ONE that:

      1. invites to do good, AND

      2. to love God, AND

      3. to serve Him

    2. is inspired of God.

    3. (Perhaps other "good works" that lack the elements of God and serving Him are examples of people being "anxiously engaged in a good cause; doing many things "of their own free will")

Elder Bednar - Saturday Morning - Oct 2020

We Will Prove Them Herewith

(Abraham 3:25)

Now is the time to prepare and prove ourselves willing and able to do all things whatsoever the Lord our God shall command us.

  • learn to learn how to learn for yourself
  • And a vital element of my work was creating, grading, and providing feedback about student performance on tests.
  • periodic tests absolutely are essential to learning
  • compare what we need to know with what we actually know
  • a standard against which we can evaluate our learning and development
  • a vital element of our eternal progression
  • prove, examine and try - various patterns of demonstrating appropriately our spiritual knowledge about, understanding of, and devotion to our Heavenly Father’s eternal plan of happiness and our capacity to seek for the blessings of the Savior’s Atonement.
  • 1833, “Therefore, be not afraid of your enemies, for I have decreed in my heart, saith the Lord, that I will prove you in all things, whether you will abide in my covenant, even unto death, that you may be found worthy.”3
  • 2020 - learning the valuable lessons that only challenging experiences can teach us.
  • Acknowledge the "greatness of God" and the truth that "he shall consecrate [our] afflictions for [our] gain."
  • Two basic principles can guide and strengthen us - (1) the principle of preparation and (2) the principle of pressing forward with a steadfastness in Christ.
  • we are commanded to “prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God.”
  • "If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear. And that ye might escape the power of the enemy, and be gathered unto me a righteous people, without spot and blameless.”6
  • Our efforts to prepare for the proving experiences of mortality should follow the example of the Savior, who incrementally “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man”7— a blended balance of intellectual, physical, spiritual, and social readiness.
  • worked since the earliest days of our marriage to follow prophetic counsel about preparing for unforeseen challenges, so “examining” our state of readiness
  • had not recognized and addressed particular needs in timely ways.
  • repeated admonitions to prepare have been proclaimed by leaders of the Church for decades. The consistency of prophetic counsel over time creates a powerful concert of clarity and a warning volume far louder than solo performances can ever produce.
  • challenging times reveal inadequacies in temporal preparedness
  • spiritual casualness and complacency inflict their most detrimental effects during difficult trials.
  • procrastinating preparation leads to unsuccessful proving
  • the five foolish virgins proved themselves to be hearers only and not doers of the word.
  • review consistently - to learn the law and not merely memorize details.
  • Effective and timely preparation precedes successful proving- find the exam period to be one of the least stressful parts
  • one of the Lord’s primary patterns for growth and development - I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more.”
  • to “consider [our] ways”12 and “examine [ourselves], whether [we] be in the faith; [and] prove [our] own selves.”
  • What do we need to improve in our lives spiritually, physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually?
  • Now is the time to prepare and prove ourselves willing and able to do all things whatsoever the Lord our God shall command us.
  • “I want you to know that as far as the gospel of Jesus Christ is concerned, our family is all in. We are all in.”
  • prepared to prove that they could learn lessons of eternal importance through the things that they suffered.14
  • Faithfulness is... trusting and placing our confidence in Jesus Christ as our Savior, on His name, and in His promises.
  • As we “press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men,”15 we are blessed with an eternal perspective and vision that stretches far beyond our limited mortal capacity. We will be enabled to “gather together, and stand in holy places”16 and “be not moved, until the day of the Lord come.”17
  • The middle-ground options will be removed from us as Latter-day Saints. (Holland)
  •  “Choices have to be made. Not making a choice is a choice. Learn to choose now.” (Holland)
  • as we both prepare and press forward with faith in the Savior, we all can receive the same grade on the ultimate examination of mortality: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant:
  •

 FOOTNOTES:

#6 - D&C 38:30 I tell you these things because of your prayers; wherefore, treasure up wisdom in your bosoms, lest the wickedness of men reveal these things unto you by their wickedness, in a manner which shall speak in your ears with a voice louder than that which shall shake the earth; but if ye are prepared ye shall not fear. 31 And that ye might escape the power of the enemy, and be gathered unto me a righteous people, without spot and blameless.”

#10 James 1:22–25

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

#14: Doctrine and Covenants 105:6

6 And my people must needs be chastened until they learn obedience, if it must needs be, by the things which they suffer.

and from them that shall say, We have enough, from them shall be taken away even that which they have.(P. Nelson "What would you do if your knowledge was taken away?)

D&C 101:22 Behold, it is my will, that all they who call on my name, and worship me according to mine everlasting gospel, should gather together, and stand in holy places;

D&C 87:8 for behold, it cometh quickly, saith the Lord.

Pres. Russell M Nelson - Saturday Morning - Oct 2020

Moving Forward

The work of the Lord is steadily moving forward.

  • The work of the Lord is steadily moving forward.

  • Unusual times can bring unusual rewards.

  • I pray that we as a people are using this unique time to grow spiritually.

  • We are here on earth to be tested, to see if we will choose to follow Jesus Christ, to repent regularly, to learn, and to progress.

  • Our spirits long to progress. And we do that best by staying firmly on the covenant path.

  • Through it all, our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, love us! They care for us! They and Their holy angels are watching over us.1

  • I invite you to ponder a promise the Lord made. He declared that “whosoever will may lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunning … and the wiles of the devil, and lead the [disciple] of Christ in a strait and narrow course.”

  • I pray that you will choose to lay hold upon the word of God as it is declared during this general conference.

  • I pray that you may feel the Lord’s perfect love for you,3,

 Footnote 1:
D&C 88:
And whoso receiveth you, there I will be also, for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.

Footnote 3:
I am encircled about eternally in the arms of his love.

My Take-Aways:

1. Nothing can stop the work of the Lord, so don't fear evil's agenda.

2. Find unusual rewards in unusual times - make lemonade out of lemons

3. See this as a unique time to grow spiritually- as I pray and live in gratitude God will show me new ways to serve Him and others.

4. Perspective: I'm here to choose Jesus Christ; Repent regularly; learn; and progress - (best done by staying firmly on the Covenant Path.)

5. If I'm not happy, it's because I'm not progressing

6. Trust the word of God to overcome evil and lead me right

7. Pray to feel the Lord's perfect love for me

He Goes before Us - Eyring - April 2020

He Goes before Us

The Lord is leading the Restoration of His gospel and His Church. He knows the future perfectly. He invites you to the work.

My beloved brothers and sisters, I am grateful to be with you in this general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In his invitation to reflect on the way the Lord’s Restoration of His Church in this last dispensation has blessed us and our loved ones, President Russell M. Nelson promised that our experience would be not only memorable but unforgettable.

My experience has been memorable, as I am sure yours has been. Whether it will be unforgettable depends on each one of us. That matters to me because the experience of preparing for this conference has changed me in a way that I want to last. Let me explain.

My preparation took me to the record of an event in the Restoration. I had read about that event many times, but it had always been to me a report of an important meeting that involved Joseph Smith, the prophet of the Restoration. But this time I saw

Be prepared to "see things you've never seen before" when you study the scriptures. Elder Bednar said this as well:“We would not choose this present set of circumstances, But given that they are upon us, it will help us have eyes to see things we have never seen before and ears to hear things that we have never heard before.

in the account how the Lord leads us, His disciples, in His Church.
How the Lord leads His disciples in His church
How the Savior of the world, the Creator-who knows all things past, present and future leads us mortals:

He teaches us step by step
He guides us, never forcing

I saw what it means for us mortals to be led by the Savior of the world, the Creator—who knows all things, past, present, and future. He teaches us step by step and guides us, never forcing.

The meeting I’m describing was a pivotal moment in the Restoration.
Is this pivotal moment in the Restoration going to parallel our present hingepoint moment in the ongoing Restoration?

It was a Sabbath-day meeting held on April 3, 1836, in the Kirtland Temple in Ohio, seven days after it was dedicated.Seven is symbolic of completion or perfection Joseph Smith described this great moment in the history of the world in a simple way. Much of his account is recorded in Doctrine and Covenants section 110:

“In the afternoon, I assisted the other Presidents in distributing the Lord’s Supper to the Church, receiving it from the Twelve, whose privilege it was to officiate at the sacred desk this day. After having performed this service to my brethren, I retired to the pulpit, the veils being dropped, and bowed myself, with Oliver Cowdery, in solemn and silent prayer. After rising from prayer, the following vision was opened to both of us.”1

“The veil was taken from our minds, and the eyes of our understanding were opened.

“We saw the Lord standing upon the breastwork of the pulpit, before us; and under his feet was a paved work of pure gold, in color like amber.

“His eyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was white like the pure snow; his countenance shone above the brightness of the sun; and his voice was as the sound of the rushing of great waters, even the voice of Jehovah, saying:

“I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father.

“Behold, your sins are forgiven you; you are clean before me; therefore, lift up your heads and rejoice.

“Let the hearts of your brethren rejoice, and let the hearts of all my people rejoice, who have, with their might, built this house to my name.

“For behold, I have accepted this house, and my name shall be here; and I will manifest myself to my people in mercy in this house.

“Yea, I will appear unto my servants, and speak unto them with mine own voice, if my people will keep my commandments, and do not pollute this holy house.

“Yea the hearts of thousands and tens of thousands shall greatly rejoice in consequence of the blessings which shall be poured out, and the endowment with which my servants have been endowed in this house.

“And the fame of this house shall spread to foreign lands; and this is the beginning of the blessing which shall be poured out upon the heads of my people. Even so. Amen.

“After this vision closed, the heavens were again opened unto us; and Moses appeared before us, and committed unto us the keys of the gathering of Israel from the four parts of the earth, and the leading of the ten tribes from the land of the north.

“After this, Elias appeared, and committed the dispensation of the gospel of Abraham, saying that in us and our seed all generations after us should be blessed.

“After this vision had closed, another great and glorious vision burst upon us; for Elijah the prophet, who was taken to heaven without tasting death, stood before us, and said:

“Behold, the time has fully come, which was spoken of by the mouth of Malachi—testifying that he [Elijah] should be sent, before the great and dreadful day of the Lord come—

“To turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the children to the fathers, lest the whole earth be smitten with a curse—

“Therefore, the keys of this dispensation are committed into your hands; and by this ye may know that the great and dreadful day of the Lord is near, even at the doors.”2

Now, I had read that account many times. The Holy Ghost had confirmed to me that the account was true. But as I studied and prepared for this conference, I came to see more clearly the power of the Lord to lead in detail His disciples in His work.
What are the details of the Lord's leading his disciples in his work with power?

Seven years before Moses committed to Joseph the keys of the gathering of Israel in the Kirtland Temple, “Joseph learned from the title page of the Book of Mormon that its purpose was to ‘show unto the remnant of the house of Israel … that they may know the covenants of the Lord, that they are not cast off forever.’ In 1831, the Lord told Joseph that the gathering of Israel would commence in Kirtland, ‘And from thence [Kirtland], whosoever I will shall go forth among all nations … for Israel shall be saved, and I will lead them.’”3

Although missionary work was needed to gather Israel, the Lord inspired His leaders to teach the Twelve, who became some of our early missionaries, Are the leaders that taught the Twelve, the First Presidency? or these Resurrected prophets? “Remember you are not to go to other nations, till you receive your endowment.”4
Missionary work is STILL needed to gather Israel.
Were our modern day Twelve taught so they could be among the 144,000 end-time missionaries while they were in Rome?

It seems that the Kirtland Temple was important to the Lord’s step-by-step plan for at least two reasons:
Was the Rome temple important in the Lord's end time step by step plan?
First, Moses waited until the temple was completed to restore the keys of the gathering of Israel. And
Were they given authority to exercise the keys of the gathering?
second, President Joseph Fielding Smith taught that “the Lord commanded the Saints to build a temple [the Kirtland Temple] in which he could reveal the keys of authority and where the apostles could be endowed and prepared to prune his vineyard for the last time.”5
Were they further prepared in the temple there?
Although the temple endowment as we know it today wasn’t administered in the Kirtland Temple, in fulfillment of prophecy, preparatory temple ordinances began to be introduced there, along with an outpouring of spiritual manifestations which armed those called on missions with the promised endowment of “power from on high”6 that led to a great gathering through missionary service.
We may soon seen an outpouring of spiritual manifestations to arm us with "power from on high" in preparation for the great gathering that is coming.

After the keys of the gathering of Israel were committed to Joseph, the Lord inspired the Prophet to send out members of the Twelve on missions. As I studied, it became clear to me that the Lord had prepared in detail the way for the Twelve to go on missions abroad where people had been prepared to believe and sustain them. In time, thousands would, through them, be brought into the Lord’s restored Church.
The Lord has prepared in detail the way for his disciples to teach those that have been prepared to believe from this pandemic. Thousands will be coming in to the church!
According to our records, it is estimated that between 7,500 and 8,000 were baptized during the two missions of the Twelve to the British Isles. This laid the foundation for missionary work in Europe.
Elder Cook said that
“This time (of pandemic)is foundational and will allow the Church to grow in the future and touch more lives and do more of the work of salvation than ever before. We will look back on this as a foundational time of preparation, and not just something we had to endure.”

By the end of the 19th century, some 90,000 had gathered to America, with the most of these coming from the British Isles and Scandinavia.7 The Lord had inspired Joseph and those faithful missionaries who went to work to achieve a harvest that must have, at the time, seemed beyond them. But the Lord, with His perfect foresight and preparation, made it possible.
The coming harvest will be beyond what we can imagine. The Lord has perfect foresight and preparation. He is going to make it possible!

You remember the apparently simple and almost poetic language from section 110 of the Doctrine and Covenants:

“Behold, the time has fully come, which was spoken of by the mouth of Malachi—testifying that he [Elijah] should be sent, before the great and dreadful day of the Lord come—

“To turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the children to the fathers, lest the whole earth be smitten with a curse—

“Therefore, the keys of this dispensation are committed into your hands; and by this ye may know that the great and dreadful day of the Lord is near, even at the doors.”8

Has the time "fully come" for the great gathering? Isn't this the ultimate expression of the hearts of the fathers turning towards their children? The Fathers have waited and waited for this great gathering. As the children respond, their hearts will turn in gratitude to their fathers whose faith and righteousness is the cause of them receiving this great blessing of having their eyes opened. It was the promise made to the Fathers that brought about their redemption.

And will this come just in time to prevent the whole earth from being smitten with a curse - the curse of unbelief and deception and tyranny of the adversary.

2 Nephi 27:28 But behold, saith the Lord of Hosts: I will show unto the children of men that it is yet a very little while and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field; and the afruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest.

29 aAnd in that day shall the bdeaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness.

I testify that the Lord saw far into the future and how He would lead us to help Him accomplish His purposes in the last days.

Who's "future" is he talking about here? Malachi's? Josephs? Whoever is being referenced, the Lord saw OUR day, and how He would lead us to help Him accomplish His purposes. Notice the LORD does it. It's HIS work. We just assist Him.
While I was serving in the Presiding Bishopric many years ago, I was charged with overseeing the design and development group that created what we named FamilySearch. I am careful to say that I “oversaw” its creation rather than saying I “directed” it. Many brilliant people left careers and came to build what the Lord wanted.
The First Presidency will be the overseers of the creation of Zion. Are you brilliant enough to choose to leave your career to help build what the Lord wants?

The First Presidency had set a goal of reducing the duplication of ordinances. Their major concern was our being unable to know whether a person’s ordinances had already been performed. For years—or what seemed like years—the First Presidency asked me, “When will you have it done?”
Joseph Smith was charged with building up Zion. It's been 200 years. Are there not angels in heaven saying, "when will you have it done?"

With prayer, diligence, and the personal sacrifice of people of great ability, the task was accomplished. It came step by step.
Prayer
Diligence
Personal Sacrifice
Great Ability

Step by Step:
The
first task
was to make FamilySearch
user-friendly
for those who were not comfortable with computers. This last 'period' of preparation has been to make the church 'user-friendly'. Don't be too harsh. Speak softly. Praise. Encourage. Invite. Make use of technology so everything is within easy reach. Comfortable. Accessible.

More changes came,
Since Pres. Nelson has been prophet their have been lots of changes
and I know they will continue to come,We are not done getting announcements.
for whenever we proceed to resolve one inspired problem, What was the 'inspired problem' that making the church user-friendly solved? Prosperity? A distracted world? Generational deception and false traditions?
we open the door for further revelation for advancements at least equally important but not yet seen. What are these revelations for advancement?

Even today, FamilySearch is becoming what the Lord needs for part of His Restoration—and not just for avoiding duplication of ordinances.Family Search is part of the ongoing Restoration. As thousands come in to the church (even millions) they will use Family Search to connect and seal their families as their hearts turn towards their fathers.

The Lord let us make improvements to help people gain feelings of familiarity and even love for their ancestors and complete their temple ordinances. This will spread! Now, as the Lord surely knew would happen, young people are becoming computer mentors to their parents and ward members. All have found great joy in this service.

The spirit of Elijah is changing the hearts of young and old, children and parents, grandchildren and grandparents.
Temples will soon again be happily scheduling baptismal opportunities and other sacred ordinances. The desire to serve our ancestors and the bonding of parents and children are growing.

The Lord saw it all coming.Yes, even this pandemic and the evil agendas to take away our freedoms. He has planned for a way out of it as well. Wait. Watch. Be ready.

He planned for it, step by step, as He has done with other changes in His Church. We can easily see how Home Church was rolled out in preparation for this pandemic. We must trust the other changes were planned for as well.

He has raised up and prepared faithful people who choose to do hard things well. What do you consider a "hard thing"? and are you doing it well? I have pondered the "silence" of my local ward and stake leaders, and have decided that the Lord wants me to be more self-reliant. I know the organization is in place if I am in need. And if I'm not, then I'm to use my agency to reach out to others and learn how to truly minister.

He has always been lovingly patient in helping us learn “line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little.”9
This is perhaps why we haven't heard "repent or be destroyed" yet.
He is firm in the timing and the sequence of His intentions, yet He ensures that sacrifice often brings continuing blessings that we did not foresee.

Be still and know that He is God. It will all happen as he's planned. There is timing to His work and sequence as well. We may have to sacrifice as we wait and endure the crosses of the world until we are delivered. But He promises blessing we do not foresee. Trust. Trust. Trust.
I close by expressing my gratitude to the Lord—He who inspired President Nelson to invite me to make a sacrifice to prepare for this conference. Pres. Eyring's sacrifice was time and study and pondering and prayer. For many, this pandemic has carved out time for this kind of sacrifice. That's just how merciful and loving God is.

Every hour and every prayer during my preparation brought a blessing. When we sacrifice, every hour and every prayer brings a blessing. Express gratitude for it, even if you can't see it. God may be "preparing" another step in your own future realized blessing.

I invite all who hear this message or read these words to
have faith that the Lord is leading the
Restoration of His gospel and
His Church.
Faith is sooooo important! Leading means He is out front!
He goes before us.
He knows the future perfectly.
He is not surprised by any of this
He invites you to the work. We were asked by our prophet to prepare

President Nelson extended a special invitation to Latter-day Saints: “We invite you to be a major part of sharing the message of the ongoing restoration of the Savior’s gospel. We will share more about this soon, but you can start today by acting on the invitations I extended to you at last general conference to immerse yourself in the glorious light of the Restoration.

“You may wish to begin your preparation by reading afresh Joseph Smith’s account of the First Vision as recorded in the Pearl of Great Price. Or ponder important questions such as, “How would my life be different if my knowledge gained from the Book of Mormon were suddenly taken away?” or “How have the events that followed the First Vision made a difference for me and my loved ones?”

“Select your own questions. Design your own plan. Act on any of these invitations to prepare yourself for sharing the important messages of the ongoing Restoration. It is your personal preparation that will help April’s general conference become for you not only memorable but also unforgettable. The time to act is now. This is a hinge point in the history of the Church, and your part is vital.”

Can you see it? The Lord is going to set His hand to recover His people! Millions will be asking YOU about the gospel. Will you be prepared to answer? The missionaries will be overwhelmed. Why will General Conference be unforgettable? Are you reading the talks to help you prepare to share the gospel? Will you look back and say "that was the Conference where it all began- The 200th Anniversary of the First Vision!" What is coming is going to be unforgettable!
He joins you in it.
He has in place a plan for your service.
And even as you sacrifice,
you will feel joy as you help others rise
All these new converts. What if there are so many we can only have sacrament meeting and then we'll have to have the rest of church in our homes, inviting people in to share the gospel with them and teach them. Is this the "great day of unity" that Pres. Eyring saw?
to be ready for His coming. To be ready for His coming, we have to 'become His children, like the people of Alma, through unity.

I testify to you that
God the Father lives.
Jesus is the Christ.
This is His Church.
He knows and loves you.
He guides you.
He has prepared the way for you.
Do you know what that 'way' is?
In the sacred name of Jesus Christ, amen.
